Scottish Fold vs Scottish Straight: What’s the Difference?

Scottish Fold and Scottish Straight kittens can come from the same Scottish cat family. Their most obvious visible difference is their ears: folded in a Fold, upright in a Straight. Here is a simple guide, with examples from our own family journal.

The Main Difference: Their Ears

Scottish Fold cats have ears that fold forward and downward. Scottish Straight cats retain upright ears, giving the outline of their head a different appearance.

Very young kittens may not yet show their later ear appearance. Scottish Fold kittens are born with straight ears, and the fold develops as they grow. An early newborn photo alone may therefore not show the difference.

Scottish Fold and Scottish Straight Kittens

Both belong to the Scottish breed family and can share many physical features apart from ear type, including rounded faces and round eyes. Both can have short or long coats, so coat length alone does not distinguish a Fold from a Straight.

When looking at kitten photos, compare the ears separately from coat color and markings. Our profiles record each kitten’s breed alongside their individual photos, making it easier to put a name to what you see.
