Ragdoll Colors and Patterns

Colorpoint, mitted, bicolor: Ragdoll patterns are easy to tell apart once you know where to look. Here is a simple picture guide.

The Three Ragdoll Patterns

Look at three places: the paws, the chin and chest, and the face.

How to Tell Them Apart

Paws. Dark paws mean colorpoint. White front paws that stop at the wrist, like mittens, mean mitted. Fully white legs usually mean bicolor.

Face. A bicolor has a white inverted V running from between the eyes down over the muzzle. Colorpoints and mitteds have a full dark mask, though a mitted has a white chin.

Colors. Each pattern comes in seal, blue, chocolate, lilac and more. A "blue mitted" is a gray Ragdoll with mittens; a "seal bicolor" is a dark brown Ragdoll with the white V.

Age. Ragdoll kittens are born almost white and darken slowly, so a young kitten's pattern can be hard to read. Their eyes are blue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the three Ragdoll patterns?

Colorpoint (no white), mitted (white mittens on the front paws, white back feet, chin and chest) and bicolor (a white inverted V on the face, white legs and a white underside).

What colors do Ragdolls come in?

The classic Ragdoll colors are seal (dark brown), blue (gray), chocolate and lilac (pale gray-pink). Red, cream, lynx (striped points) and tortie (patched points) also exist. Every color can appear in each of the three patterns.

Are Ragdoll kittens born white?

Yes, almost. Ragdolls are pointed cats, so kittens are born nearly white and their points darken over the first weeks and months. Full color can take two to three years to develop.

Is every fluffy white kitten with blue eyes a Ragdoll?

No. Ragdolls have blue eyes and a pointed pattern that darkens with age. Many long-haired kittens of other breeds also have white coats and blue or blue-looking eyes. Only registration papers confirm a pedigreed Ragdoll.
